Regular Weekend Rides

February 6 Saturday

ALL * 38/34/27 * VA * 10:15 AM * Belle Haven Picnic Area (BEL) * 40°/30%
Charles Cushman Memorial Ride. This is a leaderless self-paced winter training ride with 3 distances from which to choose. There are some good hills and it is remarkably traffic-free, with one rest stop. A ride volunteer will have the sign up sheet, cue sheets and be there to get everyone started. Then it will be self-paced riders that may or may not form into groups, generally strong "CC" and above. This month a "C" ride leader will also be present to lead a slower group of riders, provided the temp for the day is above 45°. If you are concerned about having others to ride with, then it is suggested you post to the club's web rides forum a day or two before to determine if others in your class and chosen distance will be riding , especially in colder weather. This ride is scheduled every Saturday from November to mid March. If you have questions please check the entry of the date you are planning on coming and call the appropriate contact name listed, as it changes weekly. There is frequently a post ride lunch bunch. Please park in the north lot, the SECOND one. Check the" Ride News" forum on the web site the morning of for a cancellation due to weather or roads.

Free Public Parking in the same building. (Directions: From I-66, Rt 29 / 50 or Braddock Rd take Rte 123 to the City of Fairfax. Ride Around Arlington. What it says -- we will ride around the perimeter of Arlington County, or as close as we can get. The ride uses trails and roads; no-go if there is gunk on the trails or gunk falling from the sky.

CC(F) * 25 * MD * 10 AM * Veirs Mill Park RC (VMP) * 50%
Flat and Cold. This ride's start time will depend upon the weather and the forecast for the morning of the ride. No later than 9 AM, I will post a note on the PPTC website under the Forums section Ride News whether the ride will go at 10 AM or 1 PM (or will not go at all, due to a forecast for bad weather) (see 1 PM ride description). If you cannot access the web site for whatever reason, you may call me. This is a simple ride that should not challenge too many people. It is basically a ride down to Pierce Mill and back. Except for a short distance from the Mormon Temple to East-West Highway, the entire ride will be on Beach Drive (except for an optional hill after leaving Pierce Mill, for those that cannot get enough of that kind of thing). Possible lunch after the ride at a restaurant nearby.

B(H) * 60/50/40/30/20 * VA * 10 AM * Marshall Park & Ride (MAR)
Winter Ride Mode. My plan is to show up at the Marshal P&R ready to ride at 10 AM with cue sheets for 30, 20. and 10 mile routes. The group will decide on the length and we can use a combination of the routes to get the total distance. Each loop will start and end in Marshal. We will make rest stops at the Marshall 7/11, and/or the P&R. Rest rooms are available at the BP Gas Station (0.2 mile south of 7/11) and the Marshall Recreation Center (0.1 mile north of 7/11). No go if snow, a significant amount of rain or cold and wet. I'll try to post any cancelations on the forum the night before but if the weather is too close to call the night before and I cancel, I'll post a notice before 7 AM the morning of.

BB * 48 * VA * 10 AM * Tyler ES, Gainesville (TYL)
Bull Run Mountain. This is the ride I was going to lead in December but was snowed in. Mostly rolling hills. We head to The Plains on Rt 55. Then take the southern detour to Marshall. A few hills along Frogtown to Zulla and then north to Middleburg. If it's cold we'll skip the rest stop and cruise back on beautiful, winding, rolling Halfway Rd. and Hopewell/Waterfall Rd. Tailwind home! No go below 20°, winds gusting above 25mph or on icy roads. Check the Google group Pedalers or PPTC forum Ride News for ride cancellation news.

D/C (MF) * 16 * VA * 10 AM * Shirlington Village, Arlington, VA (SHR)
Lunch in Shirlington. Join us for lunch at one of the many restaurants in Shirlington (free parking in garages and lots on weekends). See you there!!!! [P.S. Between 10 AM and 12 PM you are welcome to join the leader on the bike trails of Arlington (the Arlington Loop: traveling first on a portion of the W&OD Trail, then the Custis Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Four Mile Run Trail) with a rest stop at Starbuck's in Lyon Village, and a brief regrouping at Gravelly Point (cue sheet on PPTC website, and passed out at ride). The 3-4 miles on the Custis Trail are hilly; the rest of the ride is pretty flat. Leader rides a slow "C" pace; all levels welcome (those wanting more or fewer miles may wish to continue up the W&OD and return to join us for the main event: lunch!). If raining, icy or wind speed isgreater than 15 MPH: ride is no go. Check the "Ride News" Forum on the Potomac Pedalers website for last minute cancelation information. Patuxent Surprise. Who knows what the weather's going to be like in February? Always a surprise, but there'll be a distance to suit. All routes go to the Merkle Sanctuary, and the two longer ones stop at Patuxent River Park. All routes feature quiet rural Southern Maryland roads and fine scenery, and all less than 30 minutes from the Wilson Bridge. Joint ride with Oxon Hill. (Directions from Beltway: take Rt 267 west to Elden St / Centreville Rd exit. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp. Follow Elden St into downtown Herndon and turn left at Station St. Turn into the parking lot on the left and cycle up to the side of the Herndon train station facing the W&OD Trail.) B * 30ish * MD * 12 NOON * Proteus Bike and Fitness
Safety Discussion (delayed) and Bike Skills. The cold kept nearly everyone away from part one, so Bob and Kirk will team up for a short bike safety and bike skills talk. Bring your questions to the warmth of Jill's shop (she promises a discount to attendees) then head out for a ride through the Ag center. All classes invited but the ride leader will be attempting an honest "B" pace. (Directions: 9217 Baltimore Ave / US 1 College Park, MD 20740, about a half mile south of the Beltway)

BB (MH) * 30-40 * VA * 11 AM * Reston P&R (RPR)
Spin & (hill) Sprint. The Reston training rides return, continuing into February. Combination training and social ride; no drop, no rest stop. Spin pace except for the hill competitions (probably 5) -- which you may take at whatever pace you like. Regroup after all the competitions. Last year's average speeds ran about 15.5 to 16.5mph. The rides start at the Sunset Hills Park & Ride just west of Wiehle Ave (which is a Dulles toll road exit, FYI). The Plaza America shopping center is about a half mile from the start, with Performance Bikes, Whole Foods, and some restaurants & coffee shops. And Reston Town Center is also nearby. Check with leaders or the Pedalers Google group or PPTC Ride News forum in cases of questionable conditions. Brent DeRobertis [dtnerb@yahoo.com] PLS/NOT-CALL,

BB/A * 39-61 (varies) * MD * 11:30 AM * Allen Pond Park (ALP)
Winter Trainer. It's winter, which means that the hill country to the north and west is likely better for two planks than for two wheels. So let's rediscover the lovely, English-style riding that's east and southeast of DC as we ride from Bowie to points such as Galesville, Deale or North Beach. The pace will be more social than competitive, as keeping good base fitness is the goal. Depending on distance, there could be a rest stop. Distance depends on the weather. Afterward, there's always the chance for pizza at Armand's. The later start time will help us avoid ice, though the ride will not go if roads are icy, or if there's pouring rain, sleet or snow. Any last-minute announcements will be on PPTC site or Pedalers Google Group.

A/BB * 40ish * MD * 10 AM * South Germantown Rec (SGR)
The Fixed Gear Fun Ride. Welcome back to the third annual installment of this ever popular Sunday ride out of South Germantown Recreational Park. We will do about 40 miles on relatively flat roads up to Sugarloaf and back all in a big circle. All bikes are welcome, but fixed gears are particularly invited. Ride leader will be on a fixed gear so please be gentle with him. Please note a new ride start location just down the street from the old one and still in the Park. We will start at the Adventure Playground on Germantown Park Drive. At the traffic circle adjacent to the "old" parking lot head southeast (opposite direction of SoccerPlex) on Germantown Park Dr and go about 1/2 mile. You will see the playground on the right with a large parking lot adjacent. You will also notice a nice heated bathroom, hence the reason for the change of location.

Western Montgomery Circuit. Colder weather means shorter distances for me, but I still want to ride. Join me for a favorite ride that we all enjoyed last spring and kick off the new riding year with a familiar route through the Ag Reserve. I may also bring a shorter (25 mi) cue sheet so we can choose a ride based on conditions. No go in rain, sleet, snow or any of that stuff on the road.

Meandering with Mariette. At the end of December with no miles for the month, I took Mariette up on an impromptu ride to Airmont. We traveled some of the best roads in Virginia horse country, without having to do an "extended foxhunt." We'll make a bee-line for Middleburg, and then up to Snickersville Turnpike via Sam Fred Rd. Possible rest stop in Airmont, where we can drink in Mexican Coke--made with pure cane sugar: mmmmm. Then it's rolling back to The Plains on a Blue Ridger Backwardish route. It's not too hilly for the middle of winter. If the weather's nice and the legs feel good, Mt. Weather beckons. Route can be easily shortened if necessary. No guarantee that Mariette will join us. No go below 20°, winds gusting above 25mph or on icy roads. Check the Google group Pedalers or PPTC forum Ride News for ride cancellation news.

Unpainted Country Lanes. Perfect for "C" riders who hate hills, "CC" riders who love a pace line, and tandems. I always get great compliments about this ride. It goes on paved but many unpainted roads and twists around country lanes like a colander full of spaghetti. And yet there are plenty of long, uninterrupted stretches. Traffic is minimal and the route hardly has hills. Ascent for both distances is a flat-ish 30 feet per mile. Toilet probably not available at ride start. Rest stop at 15 miles in Nokesville Park - no snacks, some water - and another for the longer route at the Bristerburg store. (Directions: Brentsville Park, 12291 Bristow Rd, Bristow 20136, behind the Presbyterian Church - use GPS, Mapquest, or similar for directions.) Tour the site after the ride. Questions? Call me at home NLT 2 hours prior to ride start or on cell thereafter.

Highland's Horsey Hills. Low traffic, but hilly Howard County roads are featured on this pleasant route. After ride all are invited to ride leaders place a mile away for hot drinks and hot tub (bring appropriate wear for tub and carrots for the horses). Note that the ride start time is TBA ... I'll set start time 2-3 days before the ride & post on the RIDE forum, send to the google group; or you can call or email me. Temperature range is a guide only; ride decision is dependent on conditions so if cold but sunny we might go - call cell after 8:30 AM on day of ride. If marginal or in doubt CALL! (Directions: follow directions to SES but continue East on Rt 108 about 5 miles to Hall Shop Rd (about 0.5 mile AFTER crossing Patuxent River). Turn right and in .3 mile turn right into park (address is 12975 Hall Shop Rd - see http://www.co.ho.md.us/RAP/RAP_HoCoParksSchooleyMill.htm) then immediately right to first parking area. (or take I-95 north to Rt 216 west to a left on Hall Shop to a left into Park) Call cell if any problems.) Cell for day of ride: 202/997-2376
