Just led my first ride today ...

Before I begin, I rarely have time to peek on this PPTC forum -- the parameters on the google forum work better for me. So if you have a comment here and actually want me to read it in the near future, please send it to geofgee@gmail.com or visit the google forum. Thanks. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Oh boy ... so many things. (1) I always thought that it was standard to contact the ride leader before the ride. At least I recall reading that a few years ago. Turns out not to be the case. In fact, it turns out that almost _no one_ e-mails the ride leader so I was woefully short on cue sheets this morning. (2) Cue sheets with a lot of turns probably should have a map on the other side. Of course, this is only helpful if one isn't tripped up by point number one, but in theory, I think it would have helped a lot. (3) Figuring out the right pace is tough. I thought that today's ride is pretty hilly. Particularly if you add in the stop signs and that a lot of the down hill portions have a turn at the bottom. This is somewhat similar but more convenient for where I live instead of Washington and Lee High School. http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/va/-arlington/64812437344... Unfortunately, I created the map via tracking points such that the elevation gain/loss is a fractal of the true figure. My experience is that the fractal estimate on these rides is wildly underestimated; I typically gets estimates more than 100% off. So my moving average according to the GPS in my back pocket was a little more than 15 mph today -- typical for me on this ride -- such that I figured that a BB ride classification would be appropriate. But it might not be according to some comments. Thoughts? (4) Judging from the number of people that showed up, I think that there is a demand for more somewhat early close-in rides. From some before-ride comments, a decent number of people would not have showed up if the ride start was 7 AM. Of course, some people that did not show might have come if there was a 7 AM ride. I'd like to do a better job next time. So if you have general comments, please feel free to do so either here or in private. I am reworking the cue sheet -- in particular, figuring out a way to incorporate some maps for tricky spots -- so if you know of decent software drop me a line. -G
