100 Mile “Back Roads Century” Ride
September 19, 2010 – Berryville, VA
By Mark Alpert – Chairman, 2010 Back Roads Century
The Potomac Pedalers annual “Back Roads Century” ride is scheduled for September 19, 2010 in Berryville, VA. This is our Club’s largest event of the year, and it’s the only event big enough for every member to attend.
We’ll have rides of 100, 65, 50 and 25 miles to accommodate riders of all abilities. So it doesn’t matter if you’re a long-time veteran of Centuries, or you’re new to the Club; please plan on joining us for a great day of cycling and festivities.
Berryville is approximately 60-90 minutes west of Washington, DC. Therefore, its close enough that you can get up early and drive to the event, or you can make a weekend of it, by staying overnight in the area.
If you plan on riding in only one Century, make it ours. As a member of Potomac Pedalers we encourage you to support our Club. Proceeds from the Century contribute towards covering Club operating expenses year-round. And if you plan on riding in multiple Centuries this year, just be sure to include the Back Roads Century in your riding schedule. We’re counting on you to attend!
Our goal this year is to make the ride better than ever, and to have a record turnout. We’ve got lots of fun stuff planned for the day including photographer’s on-course taking pictures of all riders; we’ll be printing up logo gear that you can purchase at the event; plus a post-ride picnic, and more. Where can you get all of the details? Just go to our new website - www.BackRoadsCentury.org.
That’s right - our Century ride is so big that it now has its own website. Here you’ll find everything you need to know about the event; from the most basic questions such as “What is a Century” to details including rest stop food, cue sheets, interactive maps, and more. We even have a Forum where you can connect with other riders and find someone to carpool with; locate a riding partner for the day; or simply share Century ride experiences and advice with others.
And of course, the website is where you’ll register for the ride. Click on the “Registration” menu item at the top of the page, and you’re only a few keystrokes away from securing your spot at the Century. Plus, you’ll receive a free Back Roads Century long sleeve logo t-shirt, just for registering on-line. What’s not to like?
The Back Roads Century website is new and growing, and we want content from our members to make it great. If you’re a fitness trainer, nutritionist, bike mechanic, doctor, gear head, or an expert on anything related to cycling - contact me, and we’ll get your articles published on the site. All relevant submissions are welcome. Also, if you have photos from past Back Roads Century rides, we’ll post those as well.
Staging this event is going to take over 100 volunteers, and the best part is that volunteers ride for free. So if you’re interested in helping out, take a look at the “Volunteer” page on the Century website and see if there’s a job opening that interests you. Many of our jobs are before or after the ride, meaning that you can put in just a few hours of work and still ride the 100 or 65 mile courses. For volunteers with time consuming jobs, they can attend one future Club Century event for free. The sooner you respond, the better your chances are for getting the job you want.
So don’t wait. Go to www.BackRoadsCentury.org and register now. That way you’ll stay motivated all summer, and have a goal to strive towards at the end of the season. What better way to celebrate the change of seasons, than at a cycling event with over a 1,000 of your closest friends?
Have a great summer of riding and get your legs ready for September 19th. We look forward to seeing you there!
